Donald Trump Just Doubled Down on His Hatred of Women
Listen up! Need a little refresher course in how much Donald J. Trump hates women?
Last Saturday, the Republican nominee gave the eulogy at the funeral of the notorious Phyllis Schlafly, who died on September 5, at the age of 92. Schlafly, if you were born mercifully too late to have experienced her shenanigans first-hand, was a fiery opponent of all kinds of progressive rights—she thought abortion should remain illegal, she abhorred gay marriage, she believed women had no place in the military, and she opposed limits on nuclear testing. She is remembered best (or worst) for her fight in the 1970s to sink the Equal Rights Amendment, which would have expanded women’s rights by barring any gender-based distinctions in federal and state laws.
In her long life, Schlafly, an attorney, managed to be on the wrong side of so many issues: In 1960 she joined with other people who called themselves “moral conservatives” to oppose Richard Nixon’s presidential nomination because he supported an end to segregation.
To give you the flavor of Phyllis, here are some of the things she said over the decades: “Sexual harassment on the job is not a problem for virtuous women”; “Sex-education classes are like in-home sales parties for abortions”; “Putting women in military combat is the cutting edge of the feminist goal to force us into an androgynous society.”
Schlafly was an early supporter of Trump’s candidacy, and he returned the favor, stating in his eulogy on Saturday, “. . . in all her battles, she never strayed from the one guiding principle: She was for America and was always ‘America First.’ People have forgotten that nowadays. With Phyllis, it was ‘America First.’ ”
So this father of two women thinks that “America First” means a country where his daughters will remain second-class citizens forever?
You have eight weeks until you can tell this guy what you think of him.
